Honoring the sustainable spirit of a historic liberal arts university.
Oberlin College's Sustainability Director reached out to ask for assistance with two projects. The first was a campus-wide initiative to educate students and local residents about proper recycling behaviors. The community population held a positive outlook on sustainability initiatives, so we wanted to be sure to maintain a positive tone, and create something that could be displayed in dorms, local shops and cafes, and in other on-campus locations. The second was to create promotional stickers for the Oberlin Ecolympics, a series of events aimed at promoting University and city-wide sustainability initiatives.
The city of Oberlin put a great deal of effort into green-energy programming and infrastructure, such as solar facilities and other sustainable mechanisms to power the university and surropunding areas. However, they were encountering issues with well-meaning people incorrectly sorting recycling materials, which forced facilities to send tainted materials in the landfill.
As such, the college wanted to focus on outreach initiatives (especially its flagship Ecolympics event) to offer guidance on protocols which could often be confusing, or change from place to place depending on the facilities available locally.
